This page lists what the Illinois board of accountancy publishes for a CPA and a CPA firm: CPE hours and the reporting period, the ethics requirement, whether a firm permit or registration is required, whether peer review is required, the licence renewal cycle, and whether an out-of-state CPA may practise under a practice privilege.
It is built for owners of small accounting and bookkeeping firms, especially those licensed in one state and serving clients in another. Every entry is a snapshot of what the cited source published on the verification date; it is a research starting point, not licensing advice.
Illinois, field by field.
- Board of accountancy
- Licensing authority: Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), Division of Professional Regulation, under the Illinois Public Accounting Act (225 ILCS 450). The Act defines 'Department' as IDFPR, 'Committee' as 'the Public Accountant Registration and Licensure Committee appointed by the Secretary', and 'Board' as the Board of Examiners (225 ILCS 450/0.03), which the Governor appoints to 'determine the qualifications of persons applying for certification' and to conduct the examinations (225 ILCS 450/2). There is no 'Board of Accountancy'; the IDFPR Public Accounting page links 'Board Information' and 'Meeting Notices & Minutes'.
- CPE hours & reporting period
- 120 hours per three-year renewal period: 'a licensed CPA shall complete 120 hours of CPE every 3-year renewal period. Of the 120 hours, at least 4 hours shall be courses covering the subject of professional ethics. A licensed CPA is exempt from CPE requirements for the first renewal following the original issuance of the license. Licensees shall maintain CPE records for not less than 6 years' (68 Ill. Adm. Code 1420.70(a)(1)); registered CPAs are exempt (1420.70(a)(2)); excess hours do not carry over (1420.70(a)(5)); the first-renewal exemption is also in 225 ILCS 450/16(d). IDFPR CPE FAQ (revised 03.2026): 'All CPE must be completed in the three years preceding expiration of the license. For example, the 2027 renewal, all CPE must have been completed between October 1, 2024 and September 30, 2027.' Caps per renewal period: noninteractive self-study 60 hours and all self-study 80 hours (1420.70(b)(3)(A)(v)); instruction and preparation 60 hours (1420.70(b)(3)(B)); authorship 30 hours (1420.70(b)(3)(C)); nonverifiable CPE 60 hours in total and 10 hours per listed activity (1420.70(b)(4)(C)); personal development 24 hours (1420.70(b)(5)). No annual minimum is stated. A licensee with an address of record outside Illinois who is actively licensed there and has complied with that state's CPE renewal requirements is compliant (1420.70(c)). Source: amended at 44 Ill. What to confirm.
The Illinois Public Accounting Act is 'scheduled to be repealed on January 1, 2029' (sunset) and Section 5.2 was amended by P.A. 104-228 effective January 1, 2026. The one-hour sexual harassment prevention training stated in the IDFPR CPE FAQ (revised 03.2026) rests on 20 ILCS 2105/2105-15.5, which sets no hour count, and does not appear in 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1420.70 as read (source amended 44 Ill. Reg. 184, eff. January 3, 2020); confirm the hour figure with IDFPR. The researcher's full-Act link (ilga.gov ActID=1314) is a different Act; the Illinois Public Accounting Act is ActID=1363 (225 ILCS 450). The ilga.gov Part 1420 section index URL returns 404; individual section pages (1420.30, 1420.70, 1420.75, 1420.80) load.
